The Liveable Cities project is funded by the European Commission - DG Environment within the framework of the ‘Community framework for co-operation to promote sustainable urban development’. It brings together cities and research partners that have a wealth of experience in sustainability issues and are willing to exchange knowledge and better integrate environmental issues into all public policies.
The overall objective of the project is to encourage and support cities in their efforts to improve the quality of life in urban areas while developing local sustainable urban management plans. This objective is achieved through the development of a clear set of guidelines, a Model Plan, grounded in very practical and challenging situations, and through the organisation of thematic workshops where experiences are shared and cooperation between cities is strengthened.
The overall objective of the future Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment is to improve environmental performance and quality of urban areas and to secure a healthy living environment for Europe’s urban citizens (for more information). It aims to reinforce the environmental contribution to the sustainable development of urban areas, notably through the adoption of environmental management plans and sustainable transport plans in urban areas. This strategy is of particular concern for all local authorities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, as these will have to undertake concrete actions in order to meet the requirements of this new strategy. The project will be of help for cities to meet this particular challenge.
